Snowy Zion

For Christmas this year I asked for a new camera.  The one I had previously was pretty old and bulky and I found myself not taking it out as much because it was too heavy to carry. Luke ended up getting me an awesome sony alpha. It is a mirrorless camera, so it is tiny and light weight, perfect for fitting in a backpack. The only thing I really wanted to do for my Christmas break was to see Zion in the snow. Luke timed it perfectly so we could be there just after it snowed, and after Christmas so I would have my camera.

It was so beautiful in Zion that day. Probably my favorite look I have ever seen. A perfect blanket of white snow covering everywhere mixed with the red rocks. The further we got into the canyon, the more snow there was. We didn't even make it to the Narrows because the snow was just too deep and the road was too icy. We still managed to get some awesome photos though. The only downside to it being so snowy is that there wasn't much as far as adventures to be had. We aren't really into snowshoeing or ice climbing, so basically we just took our pictures and left. I am pretty sure it is most touristy we have ever been at Zion. Of course we did make a pitstop and had lunch at Oscar's, always a must in Zion.

Vanishing Falls

Rain seems to ever be our forecast here in the desert this winter, which means climbing outdoors is an impossibility.  We continually climb inside trying to get stronger, but it really isn't the same. We decided to take Luke's parents out to Red Rock to plan an upcoming trip. While we were there we stopped at one of our favorite pullouts, and there just so happened to be this amazing waterfall right off of the trail. Water in the desert is pretty rare, and it was wonderful to have the chance to see the water from the rain in this rare way.

The Next Day

After being stuck inside for a month, and then finally being able to get outside, we wanted the next day to be just as good...but it wasn't. We both ended up waking up later than we intended and with massive headaches. Looking back we probably should have been drinking more water the day before because of how warm it was. Not knowing if we would have the chance to climb again any time soon, we decided to head out to Red Rock again. When we got there our headaches were worse, but we were determined to climb. We made it to the intended cliff, and then despite our best efforts, realized that we weren't going to be able to climb. We ended up taking a short nap on the cliff, snapping a few pictures and heading home. Isn't that how life is kind of like? We spend so much time planning what we want, and then once we make it there things don't go our way despite our best intentions and then we are forced to make do. Red Rock Flurries

The break ended and Luke and I both headed back to the real world of working our nine to five jobs. Instead of adventuring whenever we wanted, we were back to heading out only on the weekends. After a tortuous week of work (not really just a normal week, but those first weeks back after vacation are always the hardest) we headed out to Red Rock to get some climbs in. It was a relatively quiet day, because there was a storm coming in about noon. We left early in hopes of beating the storm, because what is a weekend without being able to climb. Luke had picked out a new crag that we hadn't been to before because he wanted to try a 5.9 on trad. I wasn't particularly feeling well, my throat was hurting and my neck, and I didn't feel much like climbing. Luckily for me, Luke's climbing partner came with us. So while they were climbing, I was free to roam around and take pictures. I think I ended up with some great shots of Red Rock, as well as of Luke climbing. ...
